Experiences in the Field

Academic English Teacher

Theresa completed her fourth stage at the High School of Montreal Education Center. There, she was in charge of  the Academic English class for Secondary Five students. Her students were aged 16 to 65, and were from a variety of cultural backgrounds, academic and linguistic abilities. 


She carefully designed her units to complete the Language and Learning and Language in Drama and Literature components of the Quebec Curriculum requirements.

Immediately after her final stage, she was offered the position of  long-term replacement teacher. She designed lesson plans, formative evaluation methods and novel studies for the Secondary Three and Four Academic English classes. 

Classroom Monitor

Theresa worked as a classroom monitor for the August EISP (English Immersion Summer Program) in 2015. Classroom monitors were expected to design oral conversation discussions with Japanese university students.

 

Conversations were created to be practical, informative and informal. Monitors also were responsible for guiding each class of 30 students to different historical and cultural sites around Montreal, Quebec. 

Conversation Partner

Theresa worked as a conversation partner with the Department of Intercultural Language and Communication at McGill University.

Her students were adult English language learners from around the world. She designed her eight-week course around the needs of her students, who were working professionals who desired to improve their English-language skills. Her units incorporated ongoing evaluations for each of her students, class discussions, and group work. 

Head Residence Monitor

Theresa was offered the leadership position of head residence monitor for two of the largest English immersion programs offered by McGill. She was in charge of supervising nine other monitors, liasoning with the academic office, and ensuring over 150 students from around the world were having a quality experience with the programs. Students came from Japan, France, Italy, China, South Korea, Mexico, Colombia and the Ivory Coast.

She took on enormous responsibilities which ensured the success of the programs. Students and staff all remarked on her excellent professionalism, her dedication to her role as teacher and mentor and her compassion for her students.
